Leaks are a common cause of a high water bill
Why is my water bill so high?
A high bill can be caused by several different factors. These include:

Leaky fixtures or appliances
Your higher water bill might be caused by a leaking:
  • toilet
  • faucet or valve
  • hot water heater
  • sprinkler systems
  • appliances which use water
  • humidifiers
Leaks aren’t always easy to see. These types of leaks are called ‘silent leaks’ because you don’t always see pooling water. Call a plumbing professional if you think a fixture or appliance is leaking.

Seasonal water use
Water bills are often higher in the summer when homeowners are hosting visitors, watering lawns and gardens or filling and re-filling swimming pools.

Outdoor leaks
Check that your sprinkler system is working properly and that your garden hose isn’t leaking. Look for areas on your property that are always wet, even if it hasn’t rained. Check your driveway, curb, or street for proof of water flow. Depending on the size of the leak, you may be looking for a stream of water, a puddle that never dries up or a just a dark spot.

Underground leaks
Underground leaks are nearly impossible to discover on your own. If you suspect an underground leak, call the Region at 905-791-8711.
